Stretching, It’s Not Just For Elastic!

  If you attend a gym on a regular basis for your cardio workouts and weight training, it’s very likely that you’ve seen people performing stretching exercises. They use stretching as a transition from one state (i.e. exercising) to another (i.e. weight training) or vice versa.

But stretching isn’t something that is done only by people who work out. It’s something that almost anyone can do, just about anywhere, with little to no equipment and tremendous benefits. If you have poor circulation, little to no flexibility or you’re tense and stressed just by everyday life, then doing some basic stretching routinely can greatly enhance your life.

The benefits of stretching include;

Enhancing major body functions - When you stretch regularly, your blood circulation improves, as does your muscle coordination. Increased muscle coordination means greater balance and better posture. Mom always did tell you to sit up straight didn’t she?

Increased range of motion - Stretching regularly lengthens your muscles which in turn improves what is called your ‘range of motion’. You’ll notice an increase in the range in which your joints and muscles move comfortably, without pain.

Less pain - No one likes to be in pain. If you suffer from joint or muscle pain, regular stretching can alleviate the discomfort.

Increased flexibility - Stretching regularly keeps your muscles agile and supple. You’ll also find that when you stretch consistently that your muscles become flexible much more quickly if they stiffen as a result of exercising. In other words, you’ll bounce back that much faster! When you exercise, lactic acid is built up in your muscles. Though your body will get rid of this on its own without stretching, adding some stretches after your workout will speed up the process considerably.

Relax - We all experience stress, most of us on a daily basis. And studies have shown that it can be a killer! Our muscles tend to tense up when we’re under stress, and stretching can greatly alleviate that tension.

What you might want to buy;

Something like a yoga mat or rubber mat will help with your stretching exercises if the floor is carpeted. I have hardwood floors, but I still like to use a yoga mat for stretches that I do sitting down, it’s far easier on the tush!

You should wear loose and comfortable clothing when stretching. Skin tight jeans and a fitted cotton blouse will restrict your movements and you really won’t get the benefits you deserve. If at all possible, don’t wear socks as they can cause you to slip.

Keep water close at hand. It’ll help your body eliminate toxins that are released by your muscles as you’re stretching.
